National Science Week

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.

Running each year in August, it features more than 2,000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

Theme for 2027

Celebrating Science: Past Present and Future

Aligned with the 30th anniversary of the Inspiring Australia initiative, supported by the Australia Government, the 2027 theme will highlight how science has shaped and contributed to society over the years.

This commemorative year is to celebrate the value of science in our everyday lives and what is possible for the future. Much has happened over the past 30 years, from cloning Dolly the sheep to the landing of Mars Pathfinder. Events like this do not occur by chance. It is a result of the skilful contribution of scientists and a society that values and trusts science. Science stories like these have the capacity to engage and excite people – young and old.

ASTA President and the recent recipient of the PM Prizes for Excellence in Science Teaching, Paula Taylor, reflects on the selection of the 2027 theme.

“This theme will allow all Australians to appreciate and celebrate the development of science knowledge and achievements from the past, dating back to our First People and to the many emerging future discoveries and innovations that continue to inspire us all. We also know that science is often used to provoke excitement, engagement and wonder. Scientists and teachers alike use demonstrations and experiments to elicit curiosity and joy. This theme reminds us that science is not only captivating, but that science is a necessary pursuit and certainly worth celebrating! For this milestone anniversary, we should all be proud and grateful of what humankind has achieved through science.”

National Science Week will run in August 2027, inspiring young Australians to cultivate curiosity, grow their understanding of science concepts and comprehend the true nature of science.

The Executive Director, Margaret Shepherd, encourages all schools around Australia to apply for the school grants to enable any Australian school to showcase and celebrate science with their community.
