St Mary’s Cathedral College is a boys\' College in the heart of the city adjacent to the Cathedral.  The successful applicant will be required to work in the science laboratory assisting teachers and students.

 Essential Criteria:

  • Qualifications and experience in laboratory work preferably in a High School setting.
  • Ability to cover all aspects of WHS and safety in the work environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Good computer and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to work under limited direction.
  • Be an active member of the school WHS Group
  • Effective interpersonal skills and a willingness to work collaboratively as a team member.
  • An understanding and an ability to support the Catholic life of the College.

 About the Role

  • ·      Temporary part-time position (Monday - Friday, 8.30am – 12.30pm)

 The successful applicant will demonstrate:

·      Experience working in a Science laboratory including an understanding of the relevant safety and legislative requirements

·      The ability to support teaching staff in organising equipment for practical investigations

·      Sound computer skills including spreadsheets and word processing

·      A qualification in laboratory management along with knowledge of the Science curriculum would be advantageous

·      A commitment to the Augustinian and Catholic ethos of the College is a condition of employment.

·      Child Protection legislation applies, including a current Working with Children Check.

Marist Catholic College Penshurst Laboratory Assistant

Part Time Permanent (45-50) hours per fortnight – commencing Term 1, 2018.

The College is seeking an enthusiastic and creative professional for the position of Laboratory Assistant. Qualifications and experience in laboratory work in a secondary school is preferable but not essential. The successful candidate will have a proven knowledge and capacity to manage all aspects of WHS issues in the Science laboratory environment including handling chemicals in compliance with regulations. Essential criteria include;+ excellent interpersonal skills, a willingness to work collaboratively as a team, an ability to contribute to the College WHS group, the management of a budget and demonstrated effective organisation and record keeping.

Applicants are asked to articulate their suitability for a support role in a Catholic school where collaboration and effective use of ICT serves to enhance student learning. Applicants are advised that the College is undergoing further change and will be a dual campus school from 2020, commencing with Year 7 at the South Hurstville campus.

Laboratory Assistant

Experienced school Laboratory Assistant required to support the Science Department

We seek to appoint a skilled and hands-on laboratory assistant with superior communication and customer service skills.  The successful applicant will be passionate about education and science and will work school term times with the availability to work additional days when required.

Key tasks include;

  • ·         Assist science teaching staff with demonstrations
  • ·         Assist science teaching staff in instructing students on use/care of
  • equipment during science experiments
  • ·         Prepare, deliver and collect equipment from rooms
  • ·         Assist teachers and students with equipment
  • ·         Correctly store chemicals and equipment
  • ·         Make up solutions, reagents and media
  • ·         Carry out maintenance and repair of equipment
  • ·         Label chemicals in compliance with legislation
  • ·         Keep laboratories and preparation room clean and tidy
  • ·         Liaise with science teaching staff regarding their needs for practical work
  • ·         Maintain an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and
  • equipment, setting a priority system where necessary.


Minimum Certificate IV Lab Technician in a relevant discipline

Cert 3 in Educational Support (Science) preferred

Knowledge of Riskassess program

Knowledge of Chemical Safety in Schools package
